BOOKS I HAVE READ

Avebury Henge Shop has a wealth of information on prehistoric sites.

SYMBOLIC LANDSCAPES-The Dreamtime Earth and Avebury's Open Secrets By Paul Devereux.
This is a lovely academic book on Shamanic Landscapes. It also explains some observations about Silbury Hill which make it very much a shamanic landscape. I recommend reading this book even if you only believe in hard scientific truth and nothing else. The people who built the Avebury complex did not know about science. At least in not the way we think of it. Mr. Devereux offers an attempt at an alternative explanation and some very astute observations.
Paul Devereux has a wonderful site on sacred energy places.

the Avebury cycle
By Michael Dames
This book is interesting because it connects all the sites around the circle and gives theories of why and how the site was used as a place of worship and how the seasons play an important part. I think Michael gets a little off the track with his comparisons with central european symbolism and culture. I would rather compare its symbolism with contemporary beliefs and customs in the area. For example, I witnessed an adolescent girl walking a dog take a few extra steps so she could touch the hole stone. Legend says this stone was used by woman. They passed the clothes they would wear at the birthing of their babies through the hole. It was vandalized many long years ago and all that remains of it is a stump.Interestingly it still possesses a large energy force.

Footprints through AVEBURY
by Michael Pitts
This is a lovely little souvenir book with a short over view of the Avebury complex and beautiful pictures.

THE SECRETS OF THE AVEBURY STONES
by Terence Meaden
In this book is discussed the discovery of carved, and enhanced faces on some of the stones in Avebury and their alignment and symbolic significance. He also gives a theory that the Avebury compound is much larger then imagined. It is very interesting reading and food for thought. He has a Avebury-Stonehenge web site that is well worth looking at: Stonehenge-Avebury.net

"CELTIC DESIGNS AND MOTIFS"
